Melasma

Melasma is an incredibly common but often embarrassing condition that affects millions of women.

Are you a woman who suffers from melasma? You're not alone! In fact, millions of women experience this commonly acquired skin disorder condition; which is characterized by light to dark brown or tan spots on the face. Whether you’re experiencing your first menstrual cycle, going through menopause, are pregnant or on birth control - it all affects hormones in our bodies and can be frustrating when they manifest as strange marks on our faces.

While this discoloration can occur at any age and can threaten to take away from natural beauty; it's important to understand that this is not something to feel ashamed of at all. However, as with many skin conditions (especially on the face), it may make you feel a bit like an outsider.

What causes melasma and why do some women have more trouble with it than others?

Melasma is usually driven by hormonal fluctuations in the body – from menstruation all the way through menopause and even pregnancy or when taking certain contraceptives containing hormones.

Even sun exposure can cause a flare up to occur.

Insecurity over your appearance is very common and can make your life seem miserable. With that said, knowledge really is power.  And as such, a Dermatologist is extremely knowledgable and can often significantly reduce melasma's appearance. FDA approved medicines may be prescribed along specialty treatments, such as Intense Pulsed Light and Laser therapy, specifically targeted to melasma.
