Melanoma

Malignant Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer.

While it's one of the rarer forms, it packs a deadly punch with excessive cases resulting in death. And you will likely require further treatments such as skin grafts and surgical processes to stop its deadly spread.

Melanoma may usually be found on areas of the body that had been exposed to UV light as well as in areas with no sun exposure. The most common spots for this type of skin cancer are the back and legs. Men with fair skin are at higher risk of death from Melanoma than any other gender or skin color.

Over all, UV radiation and frequent sunburns are to blame for 90% of all cases of Melanoma.

Taking the time to observe your own moles on a regular basis can be the difference between life and death. It is important to look for the classic,

 ABCDE's of melanomas:

  • Asymmetry
  • Border irregularity
  • Color Variation
  • Diameter larger than 6mm
  • Evolution/change (over time)

Be mindful that a new or old mole may fit these criteria.

Since Males with fair skin are more likely to die from Melanoma, it's imperative they take extra caution when exposed to UV light.

Patients should also be mindful of any moles or lesions that are significantly different from their other moles. These odd unusual moles are known as Ugly Ducklings. Simply, If a mole doesn't look like the others and stands out like an "ugly duckling," then it might definitely be time to have it examined by a board certified dermatologist.

Never forget, prevention is much more desirable than the cure.

If you're suspicious of any moles on your body please take action sooner rather than later!

Just by simply monitoring the changes in your moles, you may likely be able to detect any unusual activity or growth. Thus allowing you time and opportunity to take the necessary preventive steps before it's too late.

Considering the dangers, staying aware with periodic check-in's with a dermatologist should be part of everyone's self-care routine.

Most patients will have multiple moles that will give them "melanoma scares."

But just by being proactive and taking precautionary steps, we all can drastically reduce our chances of developing deadly Melanoma.

Finally, it's very important to call your doctor if you ever feel worried about any moles you may have that look different or don't feel right, even if you think they're too small to be concerned. Melanoma's grow incredibly fast.
