At DERM TEXAS, we are committed to providing comprehensive dermatology care for all kinds of skin conditions.
Some of the common dermatologic conditions we treat include:
Acne
Acne is a common skin condition comprised of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, lumps, bumps, and/or any plugged pores that occurs mostly on the face, chest, and/or back. While teens most are most commonly affected, acne can affect anyone. Acne can cause mental health problems by distorting one’s facial features. While minor acne may go away with time, more severe acne can lead to permanent scars. Acne treatment can involve different modalities, including topical and/or oral medications, peels, and light/laser therapy. Your dermatologist can guide your treatment to find the best regimen for you.
Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis, more commonly called eczema, is a group of skin disorders that can affect any age group and is caused by many factors including skin irritation, allergic reactions, or other inherited conditions. While not contagious, it can make the skin red, itchy, and even cause bleeding in extreme cases. Treatment options for eczema include corticosteroid ointments or creams, light treatments, and oral or systemic regimens. While there is no cure for eczema, using the proper medications and implementing proper skin hygiene can greatly improve quality of life and can reduce the severity of the condition.
Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition of the central face and sometimes the eye. Rosacea can lead to flushing, blushing, burning, as well as pimples. In severe cases, rosacea can cause thickened skin and sometimes an enlarged nose. If the eyes are affected, people may experience dryness, irritation, itching, burning and swelling of the affected eye. There is evidence that heat exposure, intense exercise, stress, alcohol, and spicy foods can worsen symptoms of rosacea. While rosacea has no cure, a variety of treatment options are available that may control outbreaks and improve physical appearance.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that can cause itchy, red marks, and thick white scales on nearly any part of the body. Psoriasis can affect all ages and, while not contagious, it may have a genetic predisposition. It is normally not a life-threatening skin condition, and many people have such mild symptoms that they may not even know that they have psoriasis. Cuts, scratches, stress, infections, cold weather, smoking, and sometimes certain medicines can lead to flare-ups. A typical treatment regimen can include topical corticosteroids, light therapy, oral medications, biologic injections, and many other treatments depending on severity of your psoriasis.
Fine Lines / Wrinkles
Wrinkles are a natural, though for many unwanted, part of the aging process. Recent significant advancements in treatments that minimize the look of wrinkles include injections, dermal filler, laser treatments and microdermabrasion. Above all else, avoiding sun exposure and smoking are the most important ways to stop wrinkles from developing.
Sun Damage
Repeated overexposure to the sun and its ultraviolet radiation without proper protection such as sunscreen or long-sleeved clothing, can lead to a wide variety of conditions, including pigmentary changes, age spots, sagging skin and wrinkles, solar keratoses, and skin cancer.
Age Spots
Solar lentigines or as they are more commonly known “age spots”, “brown spots”, “liver spots” or “sun spots” are caused by exposure to the sun. The same cells that provide protective pigment from the sun can be damaged by sun overexposure. This damage deposits pigment in the skin of sun-exposed areas resulting in age spots. Treatments for age spots include medications, laser therapy, and chemical peels
Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are red, pink, or white lines that develop on the skin due to changes in weight, pregnancy, and medications among other reasons. Although not a health risk, stretch marks are a common cosmetic concern.
Spider Veins
Red or blue marks resembling webs or branches on a body part (often found on the legs and face) are called spider veins. Spider veins are smaller versions of varicose veins closer to the skin’s surface. Spider veins are usually associated with age and obesity, and can also be influenced by hormones, genetics, and sun overexposure. Treatments for spider veins include laser-based treatments and sclerotherapy.
Warts
Warts are caused by a virus that make skin cells grow uncontrolled on the external layer of skin usually on the hands and feet. Warts themselves and the subtypes of virus that cause them are not typically dangerous or cancerous and usually resolve on their own over time. Removing warts will keep them from spreading, but may require multiple treatments.
