Eczema in Children

Eczema in babies, children and adults will surface in about one in five individuals.

Sadly, babies will have a much higher possibility; doubling their chances of experiencing eczema.  According to the National Eczema Association, over 31 million Americans suffer with this skin ailment. Current data suggests that 80% of children will “outgrow” their AD by adolescence or adulthood.

Children with eczema are more likely to be diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other conduct disorders.

Eczema is indiscriminate. People of all skin colors, races and ethnicities can be affected by eczema. However, in the U.S., children with eczema who are African American/Black or Hispanic tend to have more severe disease than white children.

  • White – 11%
  • Black or African American – 10%
  • Asian or Pacific Islander – 13%
  • Native American – 13%

Childhood eczema has increased from 8% to 15% since 1997

Itching is the most burdensome and annoying symptom of eczema, often causing  skin redness and sleep loss. One may quickly see how uncomfortable this condition can be for the tiniest of us, babies. It is particularly cruel because it creates a burning sensation, and may also feel like tingling or stinging. Of course this exacerbates the eczema as one is:

Incessantly wanting to scratch!

Pain is sometimes associated with excessive scratching. Nobody wants to suffer. Children with eczema can also affect the emotional and social well-being of parents as well. As a parent, the worst pain is when our children are suffering. Babies and children may barely be able to rest or even sleep due to the pain and itching. Lack of sleep is not only annoying but can lead to more serious health issues.

Who knew that an annoying itch along with skin redness could affect life so negatively? Parents and caregivers of children with eczema report feeling embarrassed about their child’s appearance as well as frustration, helplessness, sadness, and guilt, due to their child’s skin disease.
